Sustainability: A Driver for Value

Join us for an enlightening hour-long seminar that promises to add value not only to the buildings and spaces under your care but also to you as an FM professional and the wider FM profession.

We know operations contribute an overwhelming proportion of a building's carbon footprint and can enhance the well-being of people and communities. With buildings accounting for 20% of Aotearoa New Zealand’s carbon footprint, what is the FM community doing to drive change and support the transition to a low emissions future?

The Government has sent a clear signal that buildings energy disclosure will come into effect by 2024, and we need to respond to the actions set out in the Emissions Reduction Plan (ERP), and other drivers such as the Building for Climate Change (BfCC) programme and the Task Force on Total Carbon Financial Disclosures (TCFD).

Most importantly, we know that reducing emissions and other building sustainability measures have a positive impact on the well-being of occupants, the quality of overall building operations and the elevation and importance of the FM profession. We can’t afford to be bystanders.

  • What are the flow-on requirements of government legislation on buildings and infrastructure?
  • What can facilities managers do to drive change and take a leadership position?
  • What can we be doing to ensure the buildings and spaces under our care are resilient in the face of climate change and will meet the escalating and urgent requirements in response to our climate change targets?
As well as answering these questions, our presenters will discuss the co-benefits of emissions reductions, explore the tools currently available and share some inspiring success stories.

Our series presenters - Mark Sinclair, Managing Director at FM Concepts and Bobby Shen, NZGBC's Business Development Manager for Existing Buildings - will be joined in each of the regions by a local case study presenter.

Mark Sinclair, Managing Director at FM Concepts
Mark is co-founder and director of FM Concepts Ltd, dedicated to improving commercial building management services and operational effectiveness within the built environment. With over 24 years' experience, Mark specialises in managing long-term technical and strategic maintenance planning as well as sustainability programmes.

Bobby Shen, NZGBC's Business Development Manager for Existing Buildings
Bobby leads on the existing building rating tools (Green Star Performance, NABERSNZ, carboNZero Building Operations), joining the NZGBC from a background in commercial architecture and sustainability. His goal is to empower property and facility managers to understand their buildings under the lens of sustainability and assist them to manage their buildings better.

Following on from this seminar series, on Tuesday 15 November in Auckland, a full-day pilot workshop will explore in more detail the frameworks and tools available for facilities managers to drive the continuous improvement in sustainable building operations. More details here.
